Thursday's child on Friday the 13th

No blog yesterday cause the site was down except read only.

Thursdays child yesterday cause I have FAR to go.  I spent all day in the garden and got two more rows weeded and the potatoes newspapered and hayed and covered.  It's not pretty, but hopefully it will be effective against those nasty potato bugs.

Hey, for a novice, working alone with 9 gauge wire, bolt cutters of death and flimsy nonwoven cloth, I think it's a work of art (modern, not neoclassical)

I also took the netting off of the squash as they are getting close to blooms.  I substituted with a trick I heard from several sources, to whit, cut a toilet paper cardboard roll in half and stick it around the stem of the squash with 1/2 of the tube under the dirt and 1/2 on top of the dirt.  I also put tin foil around the stems.  We'll see if this works.  If not, its SURGERY like last year.  The plants did survive and there is something satisfying about fishing around inside the squash with a pair of long forceps and nabbing one of the future chicken food grubs.  But it's better for the plant never to have been infested at all.

Ugh, and my herb garden is a MESS.

yes, there are herbs in the grass somewhere

Later in the afternoon, I spent a little time with the baybays.  They are in their terrible 2's (weeks) and all day LONG its peep peep peep peep.  I don't know how MB2 stands it.  They are starting to square off with each other as well.  I didn't have my camera for this but it's really funny.  It's like bob and weave but in REALLY fast motion.  One time I saw one go for another and the victim jumped completely over the perp and got it in the rear.  Hilarious.

I also had some kind of issue with the cockers about 4 pm.  There were five of them under the rose bushes and they were giving the alarm cackle for about 30 minutes.  I kept checking around and there were no snakes, no animals and no hawks.  Go figure.  But one would start then another would start then they would all go.  Suddenly, they all stopped.  This was when I discovered that Gmar's roses have black spot.  Unfortunately, they will just have to man (rose) up and get better or die.  I just do not have time to deal with it.

I did get a good pic of the baybays in their duck and cover mode:

All clear mom?

I have decided that there are 3 bag baybays.  Mom and dad are rarely on the nest as they are constantly having to feed them.

Anyway, I was so tired and bummed about the weeds in the garden and having to work in the drizzle on and off, I had a little solo pity party to let it all out.  Gotta love being able to go in the woods and scream in the country.

FRIDAY:

Today, I was determined to finish the weeds in the garden, but alas, it was not to be.  It rained 1/2 inch from 7-8 am which made everything VERY steamy.  Then Gmar was very insistent that she get her hair cut today, so I had to take her to Wilmington.  That killed about 3 hours.  When I got home, I was able to weed the chives row and start planting some of my pyrethrin daisy seedlings, when I go a call from one of the aunties telling me that one of my cousins, her mom and her daughter were going to be at the church for pre wedding photos.  I don't get to see them often so I took some time to go visit.  That was about 2 hours lost (not wasted though)

candid shot of the bride-to-be.  VERY lady-like with the arms..
When I got home, I finished planting as many daisies as I could in two rows between the potatoes and chives.

I also transplanted the simmon tree in a hole that Jim dug for me by the fence.  The root system was not great so I don't know if it will survive, but I put root stimulator on it and will keep it watered well and maybe it will be a go.

So now, this has run on long enough, but I had two days to get through.

Tomorrow, I have going to the winery to pick up my quarterly wine selection on my list.  Such a burden...
