A Tale of Two Sitties

It was the nest of times, it was the worst of grimes.

We finally got the brooder house built today.  Jim did most of the work but I did learn to use another type of chop saw.  It took us a while, but it should be fine for future brooding as well.  It is not painted or shingled yet, but the floor is painted and so is the nest box, the straw is in place, and tomorrow night, MB2 goes from nest 1 to nest 2, along with her eggs, so she can get acclimated to it.  I hope it works.  I don't want her to abandon now.

ready for eggtion

That pretty much took the whole day.  I did get another irrigation line connected but was too pooped to  bury it and plant my potatoes.  I got my second batch of potatoes in the mail today, so I have to get both in the ground tomorrow.

I happened to walk by the old garden and was totally surprised to see my beans, cucumbers, soy and corn peeping up.  Awesome.

my own magic bean stalks

But I also realized that I hadn't watered the seedlings in the second cold frame and they were all wilted.
I hope I haven't killed them all

dying of thirst.

I finally got to sit on the porch for about 5 minutes, until too many girls came and I had to chase them off.  Gmar doesn't like the chicken poop on the porch.

but we like it here.  JW can't find us.

Then, since Jim helped me do the coop, I helped him make a carrot cake.  By the time we were done, my back felt like it was going to bend the wrong way at any moment.  AND, I was covered in paint and my feet were totally black.

So to the tub.  I used some of the eucalyptus goat milk bath stuff my sister sent me.  It was heaven!!!!

So started with a cocker sitting on a nest and ended with Farmer Ann sitting in the tub.  There's my tale of two sitties.

  1. Sounds like your feet got paint on them from making carrot cake. That must be some carrot cake. Haha! Question: do the hens prefer to nest in a place separate from their hen house? Is that why you built a brood house? Please educate me.

  2. Sorry, I was tired and used bad english. I didn't get paint or black feet from the carrot cake, but from building the brooder house and being in the garden.

The brooder house is to get MB2 out of the normal nest box which is 2.5 feet off the ground. The peeps can't handle that distance. Also, I want to separate the peeps from the rest of the girls and JW until they fledge, for their own safety. They also get their own little yard so they won't wander in the wide world until they are old enough to handle it.

  3. Ah. That makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to explain.

  4. So does this mean there will be a bunch of mini MB2s & JWs running around soon?
